Disney Cruise Line: What to Know Before You Book | Don and Diana’s Travels

Disney Cruise Line: What to Know Before You Book

Disney Cruise Line is built around one goal. Make the whole family happy at the same time. Kids get characters, pools, and clubs made just for them. Adults get quiet decks, spas, and restaurants just for grown-ups. Everyone gets Disney-level service.

This guide covers the ships, the food, the private island, the cost, and what to check before you book.

Cruise lines update ships, packages, and pricing often. We do our best to keep this accurate, but details here may not reflect the very latest changes. Always confirm current details on Disney Cruise Line’s site before booking.

The Ships in the Fleet

Disney has a smaller fleet than mega cruise lines like Norwegian or Royal Caribbean. Each ship still feels less crowded than the largest ships from other brands. The fleet includes eight ships as of 2026. The classic ships are the Disney Magic, the Disney Wonder, the Disney Dream, and the Disney Fantasy. The newer ships are the Disney Wish, the Disney Treasure, the Disney Destiny, and the Disney Adventure. A ninth ship, the Disney Believe, is set to join the fleet in 2027.

Newer ships have more modern features and bigger pool decks. Classic ships still get regular menu and activity updates and hold up well against the newer builds. See which ships sail on your preferred dates before you pick a cabin.

Castaway Cay: The Private Island

Many Disney Caribbean and Bahamas cruises stop at Castaway Cay. This is Disney’s own private island. It has beaches split into zones for families, adults, and kids. There is a water play area for younger children and a snorkeling lagoon for older kids and adults.

Food and drinks on the island are included in your cruise fare. This is one of the most loved parts of a Disney cruise for most families.

Dining on a Disney Ship

Disney uses a rotational dining system. Your family moves between a few main dining rooms over the course of the cruise. Your servers move with you each night. This means the same staff gets to know your family, your kids’ favorite drinks, and any allergies right away.

Each main restaurant has its own theme. Some ships have a pirate-themed restaurant. Others have an animation-themed room with characters that interact with the walls and screens. Adults-only restaurants are also available on most ships for an extra fee.

Characters, Kids Clubs, and Adult Space

Character meet-and-greets happen throughout the cruise. Some meals include a character breakfast or dinner as part of the fare. Kids clubs are split by age group, with staff supervision included at no extra cost. This gives parents real free time during the day and evening.

Adults are not left out. Most ships have an adults-only pool deck, a spa, bars, and a lounge area kept quiet and separate from the family zones. Browse ship layouts and deck plans to see how each ship splits family space from adult space.

Cabin type, ship, and season all affect the final price. Compare your options directly on Disney’s site before you book.

What Disney Cruises Cost

Disney Cruise Line usually costs more than other mainstream cruise lines. You are paying for smaller ships, more staff per guest, and the Disney name. Many families feel the extra cost is worth it for the level of service and the character experiences.

The fare covers your cabin, main dining, most entertainment, and character events. Extra costs can include alcohol, WiFi, spa visits, photos, gratuities, and shore excursions off the ship. Specialty dining at Palo and Remy also costs extra. Disney does not offer a bundled drink package like some other lines. This means alcohol costs add up per drink.

Tips Before You Book

Book early, especially for holidays

Disney cruises during Christmas, spring break, and summer sell out months ahead. Book as early as you can if your dates are fixed.

Pick your ship based on your kids’ ages

Some ships have features built more for younger kids. Others lean toward teens and adults. Check what each ship offers before locking in your pick.

Set a budget for extras

Photos, spa time, and shore excursions can add up fast. Decide ahead of time what you plan to spend beyond the base fare.
