The Holiday Travel Expenses People Forget to Budget For
Most holiday budgets start with the ticket and stop there. Then the trip arrives, and the real costs show up one at a time. Bag fees at the counter. A week of parking. Airport meals. A kennel deposit. A resort fee at checkout. A ride from the airport. A hotel room nobody planned for.
This guide covers the holiday travel expenses people forget most, so you can put a number next to each one before you book. Start with the biggest line first and check flight prices before adding up the extras. Then set aside room for a few bookable activities through Viator, so the fun part of the trip has a budget too.

Airport Costs That Add Up Fast (1-6)
- 1. Checked bag fees. Most airlines charge for each checked bag, each way. A family of four with one bag each can pay a surprising amount before leaving the ground. Read up on how luggage weight turns into extra fees before you pack.
- 2. Overweight and oversize charges. Holiday gifts make bags heavy. An overweight bag can cost far more than the first bag fee. Weigh every bag at home, as shown in the photo below.
- 3. Airport parking. Daily rates add up over a long holiday week, and lots near the terminal usually cost the most. Price the airport lot, off-site lots, and a drop-off ride before you pick one, and book ahead when you can.
- 4. Rides to and from the airport. Holiday demand can raise rideshare prices. Count both directions, and plan for a late-night ride home when you land.
- 5. Airport food and drinks. Meals inside the terminal cost much more than the same meal outside it. Budget for at least one meal and a few drinks per person, even if you pack snacks.
- 6. Extras on the cheapest fare. A low fare can hide charges for seats, bags, and changes. Work out whether basic economy is really cheaper for your trip before you click buy.

Budget a Little Fun Before the Fees Eat It
Holiday tours, light displays, food walks, and day trips all have clear prices on Viator, so you can add them to your budget before you leave. Popular holiday experiences sell out, and booking early lets you pick the time that works for your plans.

Pet Boarding and Costs Back Home (7-10)
“The kennel deposit, the extra boarding nights, and the holiday surcharge are the costs that nobody pencils in until the invoice arrives.”
- 7. Pet boarding. Holiday boarding often costs more per night than usual, and spots fill early. Book as soon as your dates are set.
- 8. Deposits and holiday surcharges. Many facilities ask for a deposit up front and may charge extra for peak days. Ask for the full price in writing, including any holiday rate.
- 9. Vaccine records and vet visits. Boarding facilities usually require current shots. A vet visit to update records is a cost you may need to add.
- 10. A sitter as another option. A pet sitter at your home can cost more or less than boarding, depending on your pets and how long you are gone. Compare both before you decide.

Lodging is where surprise fees hide best. Compare totals, not just the nightly price, and check what is included before you book.

Resort Fees, Transfers, and Costs at Your Destination (11-16)
- 11. Resort fees. These daily charges cover things like pool access or Wi-Fi, whether you use them or not. Since May 12, 2025, a federal rule requires hotels and short-term lodging to show the total price, including mandatory fees, up front. The rule does not ban resort fees, so check the total before you pay.
- 12. Hotel parking. Many hotels charge a daily fee for parking, and valet costs more. Ask about it before you book, especially in big cities.
- 13. Airport transfers. A shuttle, taxi, or private car from the airport to your hotel is a real cost, and it happens twice. Booking a transfer ahead gives you a set price. You can compare transfer options in the resource section below.
- 14. Rental car extras. The daily rate is only part of the bill. Add fees, insurance, gas, tolls, and parking. Check rental car and hotel bundles via Expedia to see whether a package lowers the total.
- 15. Holiday menus and closures. Some restaurants raise prices on holiday weekends, and others close. Plan a few meals ahead, and keep a grocery run in your budget. A bookable food tour on Viator can also lock in one good meal with a known price.
- 16. Port costs on a cruise trip. If your holiday trip includes a ship, parking and transfers at the port are often forgotten. Read the port parking and transfer details for Miami cruises as an example of what to expect.

Start Your Booking HereUnexpected Hotel Nights and Surprise Costs (17-21)
- 17. An extra hotel night. Winter storms, canceled flights, and missed connections can leave you stranded. A last-minute room near the airport often costs more than one booked ahead.
- 18. Long gaps between checkout and your flight. A late flight can leave you with hours and nowhere to go. See what to do when your flight leaves hours after checkout, and budget for bag storage or a late checkout.
- 19. Meals during a delay. A long delay means extra meals, snacks, and drinks that you did not plan for. Set aside a small amount for this.
- 20. Rebooking and change fees. Some fares charge to change your flight, and others do not. Check the fare rules before you buy, so you know what a change would cost.
- 21. Travel insurance. Insurance can cover cancellations, delays, and medical costs, and it is much easier to buy before a problem than after one. You can compare plans in the resource section below.

How to Budget for the Costs You Forget (22-25)
- 22. Write every category down. List flights, bags, parking, rides, food, pet care, lodging, fees, transfers, cars, and insurance. Then give each one a number. For the full method, see building a full holiday travel budget.
- 23. Add a cushion of 10 to 15 percent. Holiday trips bring more surprises than normal trips. A cushion keeps one extra fee from becoming a crisis. Our points and miles guide for travelers shows how some cards also add perks like lounge access.
- 24. Book the big costs early. Flights, lodging, and boarding all get pricier closer to the holidays. Use the best booking windows for holiday flights to time your purchase, then run a second fare check through Aviasales.
- 25. Earn points on spending you already plan to do. A card that rewards travel can offset some of these costs. See a rewards credit card that fits your trips, and pay the balance in full so interest does not cancel the savings.
How Rafael Found the Money Hiding in His Holiday Trip
Rafael planned his holiday trip around the ticket price. Then the extras arrived. Two checked bags, eight days of parking, a kennel deposit for his dog, a resort fee at checkout, and a hotel night when his connection fell through. The ticket was only about half the real cost.
The next year, he listed every cost before booking and added a cushion. He weighed his bags at home and booked the kennel early. He also reserved a transfer so he knew the price ahead of time. The trip cost about the same as the year before. This time, nothing in it was a surprise.
Quick Answers About Holiday Travel Costs
How much extra should I add to a holiday travel budget?
Many travelers add a cushion of 10 to 15 percent on top of their planned costs. Holiday trips bring more surprises than normal trips, such as delays, higher prices, and last-minute fees.
Can a hotel add a resort fee after I book?
A federal rule that took effect May 12, 2025 requires hotels and short-term lodging to show the total price, including mandatory fees like resort fees, up front. The rule does not ban resort fees, so always check the total before you pay.
Is airport parking cheaper than a rideshare?
It depends on how long you are gone and how far you live from the airport. Multiply the daily parking rate by the number of days, then compare it to the cost of rides both ways. Holiday demand can raise both.
When should I book pet boarding for the holidays?
Book as soon as your travel dates are set. Holiday spots fill up early, and many facilities ask for a deposit and up-to-date vaccine records.
